A regular at the Advertising Standards Authority, sports nutrition supplement company USN is not in trouble this time - it has laid a complaint of false advertising against a competitor, NutriTech.

USN alleges NutriTech is making false claims about the ingredients in the Diet Meal, Mass Builder and Premium Pure Whey Lite.

Dormehl Gertenbach, USN national sales director, said: "We were shocked to find the results of the independent testing on NutriTech products, especially the drastic discrepancies presented."

The supplement, complementary medicine and vitamin industry is not regulated, meaning no one checks what the products consist of or if they work.

Gertenbach said: "Our intention is to ensure the supplement industry is cleaned up."

USN appeared before the Advertising Standards Authority "no less than 24 times in nine years ... primarily for misleading claims", the authority noted in 2013.

NutriTech spokesman Chris Walton said it was awaiting lab results on the disputed products.
