A security guard accused of being the Century City serial killer abandoned his bail application yesterday as the state laid more charges against him.

The 30-year-old Gugulethu man initially faced a rape and a robbery charge, but yesterday state prosecutor Morney Julius added a charge of murder and another of robbery.

The man is now charged with the murder of 20-year-old Nothemba Ndondo, whose body was found near Century City railway station on December 19 last year.

He allegedly assaulted her "by hitting her on the head with a rock". A heavy police contingent kept an eye on the suspect during the court proceedings, partly to protect him from angry members of the public packed into the gallery.

Magistrate Sean Lea postponed the case to March 24.
