High-speed car chases often end badly, but this one resulted in a smile - at least for the pursuing police officers.

Police were chasing Jason Davis, of Monroe, Michigan, in the US after he sped through a traffic stop, according to news agency UPI.

In his frantic effort to get away, Davis, 33, crashed through a gate into the parking lot of the Toledo Correctional Institution and drove around the jailhouse until a row of spikes punctured all four of his tyres.

Davis refused to leave his vehicle and had to be forcibly removed.

He was charged with two counts of vandalism of government property, failure to comply with police officers, possession of drugs, resisting arrest, obstructing official business, failure to stop at a stop sign and not using a turn signal.

Davis is due to appear in court on Thursday.
