Summer is the time for swimming in chlorinated pools and salty seas, and while it is loads of fun, your hair suffers.

''While we're at the end of the summer season we should stock up on avocados, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar to take into the winter months," says Leonete Galiano, founder of Wema, an all- natural locally made range of body care products. Galiano offers quick, easy tips to help keep hair happy and healthy over the end of summer.

Apply an oil rinse

Coconut, olive, and avocado oils are excellent natural hair treatments. Good at penetrating the hair shaft, the oils will also make hair naturally shiny and frizz-free. Shampoo hair as usual and then work in oil from ends to roots. Hair will feel moisturised afterwards, but not greasy.

Wash less

Daily shampooing does more harm than good to hair, stripping it of nutrients and natural oils. This leads to brittle strands, little shine, and dry scalp. Use homemade shampoo made with baking soda and water in place of regular shampoo to go a bit longer without washing. To get rid of excess oil without having to do a full wash dab some witch hazel onto a cotton ball and soak in along your scalp.

On one condition

Rinse hair with apple cider vinegar diluted in water for a quick, natural conditioner. The vinegar treats itchy, dry scalps and leaves hair soft, smooth and shiny. Use coconut oil or shea butter to moisturise hair after washing. The oil will give some shine and, if you have wavy hair, it helps form natural curls.

Put a mask on it

Keep your hair safe from the sun with a simple, easy-to-make hair mask. Use natural ingredients suited to hair type - avocado, eggs, tea tree and coconut oils are excellent additions to a homemade hair mask. Use a natural deep conditioning mask once a week to put extra moisture into your hair.

Spritz and shine, smile and wave

Make a concoction of water, aloe vera juice and avocado oil. Keep it on hand and spritz whenever moisture or control is needed.
