Attorney Anton de Beer, 45, was forced to don a gown of a different kind yesterday when he appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on a charge of theft.

He allegedly stole trust money totalling R2-million from a Johannesburg client.

The attorney stood before the court in his pyjamas and dressing gown as he had recently undergone surgery for a ruptured appendix.

He told the court that he was generally in good health but he would have to return to hospital because "the wound is bleeding".

De Beer was granted R15000 bail. He then asked permission to wait for his bail to be approved downstairs in the cells as there was "a more comfortable chair there".

De Beer will have to report to the Umbilo police station every Friday until the case is heard next month in Johannesburg.
