The widely opposed tidal pool proposed for Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban, is one decision away from becoming a reality.

The final environmental impact assessment, in favour of a R27-million tidal pool at Umhlanga Lighthouse Reef, has been sent to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs for a final decision.

But community organisations, residents and local businesses that cater to domestic and international tourists say the pool will ruin the coastline and they are considering legal action.

"While I would not like to pre-empt anything, I do think there is a possibility that residents and local businesses will band together and lodge some court application," said Heinz de Boer, the DA ward councillor.

"We will, however, have to wait for the record of decision from province before calling any meetings.

"I will be asking the public protector to investigate whether the city is basically wasting its money on a project that has been met with such vehement opposition."
