South Africans took to Facebook and Twitter to express their shock and dismay at the chaotic State of the Nation address. Here is a selection of views:

Even the heavens weep in Cape Town for the sad state of politics in our country. #SONA2015 please bring back our nation's rainbow - Jo-Ann Strauss

This speech is like trying to resume the Xmas lunch after that weird cousin had a nervous breakdown and swore at everyone. - Charles Cilliers

Why must everyone but the ANC compromise? I don't support this logic. The root of all this chaos is lack of accountability on Nkandla. - Lukhona Mnguni

The man from Nkandla will go down in history as the SA president who has had so many negative "firsts" during his reign. - Mawande Mvumvu

This drama is a very visual example of why you should never sweep anything under the carpet and hope it goes away forever. - Devi Sankaree Govender

DA, EFF, keep your heads up. This is a war on corruption. - Kabelo Lesiba Kgoele

I mean, these guys have made Maimane look radical. - Ory Okolloh Mwangi

It was the age of foolishness...
It was the epoch of incredulity...
It was the season of Light,
It was the season of Darkness. - Justice Malala

When MPs applaud news that foreigners won't be able to own land, do they picture German penthouses in CT, or Somali spazas on the Midrand? - Murray Hunter

#SONA2015 drinking game. Every time another nail is driven into the coffin in which our beautiful democracy lies, drink. - Deep Fried Man

That time China bought 1600 hectares of South African land for R1billion in 2014... What's this about foreigners & land ownership? - Ulizwi Linoshukela

Jammed signal a breach of citizen's rights. South African politics is not for sissies - Dion Chang

And on a lighter note, Twitter users were a flutter after the president got our new Miss World’s name wrong. Uveka Rangappa commented: "Ronelle Strauss??? She's only the first Miss SA to become Miss World in how long? Don't be upset Rolene!"

But it was our swimming champion Chad le Clos, who also got a shout-out from the president, that generated a host of comments from the public.

I always thought @JelleYpma did the perfect and ultimate 'awkward face' until I saw Chad le Clos tonight at Parly, said Ishay Govender-Ypma.

‏@visseranton tweeted "Chad Le Clos breaks though cordon, sprints from parliament, dives into sea and starts to swim to Australia".

@VuyoTheGreat commented, "Chad le Clos probably whatsapped his mates on some "duuude I'm in tears! Best circus ever" while @joaomatthews posted, "Chad Le Clos didn't give up chilling with his dolphin homies for this".
