Creatives, innovators and some plain old weirdos have descended on Cape Town for the latest incarnation of the Design Indaba.

Born in 1995, the conference has grown into one of the world's leading design showpieces and allows more than 40 speakers and more than 2500 delegates to stew in a melting pot of creativity for just over a week.

The conference covers everything design-related, from art, music, fashion and decor to architecture, film and advertising and almost anything vaguely related to the human capacity for creation.

It also serves as a showroom for local designers to peddle their wares to a global market.

Some of the notable happenings at this year's event include a fashion show by celebrated local designer Thula Sindi, a performance lecture from William Kentridge and a look at some of the latest work of Senegalese photographer Omar Victor Diop, who has captured global attention with his portrayals of Africa.

For those unburdened with the creative gene, it offers fab people-watching opportunities.

Being at the confluence of everything artistic, there are sure to be hordes of oddballs and interesting characters to keep observers of humankind entertained for hours.
