The mirror being held by former president Nelson Mandela in his portrait A Reflection of Dignity raised R100000 at the Pretoria leg of the 21 Icons Charity Auction on Saturday night.

The 21 Icons project is a photo-documentary by Australian-born Adrian Steirn, showcasing luminaries including musicians Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Johnny Clegg, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Advocate George Bizos and artist William Kentridge.

Funds raised will be split among the chosen charities of the icons. The auction continues until March 31.

Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa pledged R100,000 from the City of Tshwane.

“The idea of 21 portraits translated and transformed through lens, paper and short film that gave birth to a charitable legacy vividly tells us a tale of a South Africa we continue to zealously build and aspire for,” Ramokgopa said.

Steirn said that it was incredible to work with all of the icons but stressed that they were “just people”.

“That was the most important lesson learnt, that they are just good people."
