There was a lot to see at the DI Expo, including the "most beautiful object in South Africa" nominations and various exhibition stands from African countries including Senegal and Kenya.

There was also much to tempt the shopper looking for innovative wares to add to their home, jewellery and fashion collections.

The Block Shop

A passion for functional design and a love of great food resulted in a KwaZulu-Natal couple developing bamboo blocks for the kitchen. From the success of their invention, ''the dippy egg board", came the creation of other boards for a foodie's kitchen. The solid bamboo blocks are handcrafted in Ballito. Every block can be custom engraved with a personalised logo.

Elsje Designs

Elsje van der Merwe's company, Elsje Designs, specialises in bespoke graphic design, but she recently shifted her focus to include décor. Her hanging geometric planters are like sculptures that can be suspended to add some welcome greenery to personal space.

Cath Price is a regular at Design Indaba. Her work is quirky, original and easy to use, usually involving ceramic cows resting on servers or pigs climbing out of bowls. This year she showed some new pieces, including beautiful figure vases and hands that hold flowers or cutlery,
