This is the best time of the year to get married, and is the most popular season for brides and grooms to plan their nuptials, according to wedding planners.

"The solemnisation of marriages tends to peak in either March or April, depending on the month of the Easter holidays," said Statistics SA.

This past weekend in the US, The Knot 2014 Real Weddings Study found that wedding budgets have continued to rise and guest lists to shrink.

According to the report, an average US wedding, excluding the honeymoon, costs close to R388000, with 45% of the nearly 16000 couples exceeding their budget and 23% lacking a budget altogether.

It also found that brides spent an average of about R16866 on the wedding dress alone.South African wedding planners say our brides tend to spend upwards of R20000 for a dress for the special day.

"They will usually splurge on the dress, spending between R20000 and R45000 for an imported gown," said Carey-Anne Robson, of The White List.

She said guest lists were getting shorter, with the average now between 80 and 100 guests.

With an average cost of between R300 and R500 a guest, this means the bill for an average wedding, catering for 100 guests, could be R30000 to R50000.

Kimberley Lomas, the owner of Natural Nostalgia, advised couples to budget R20000 for flowers and table decor.

"Flowers always transform a wedding but lots of brides are asking for more foliage and enjoying playing with lots of greenery and fynbos in whimsical arrangements.

"There is a definite trend to more simple, natural and striking colour arrangements."
