Miss SA laurels go to little Liesl

Liesl Laurie, of Eldorado Park, southern Joburg, was named the 57th Miss South Africa at the climax of a 90 minute-long ceremony at Sun City's Superbowl last night. Despite there being no clear frontrunner, murmurs in the crowd suggested that once it came down to the top 5 Ntsiki Mkhize or Nicole Lamberts would take the crown. But it was the diminutive Laurie who inherited it from Ziphozakhe Zokufa, who had taken it over from Rolene Strauss after the latter won the Miss World title in December. The power pairing of Patrice and Precious Motsepe topped the celebrity couple poll, which also included Mandla and Lexi, of Big Brother fame, Dineo Moeketsi and her beau Solo, model Maps Maponyane and actress Nomzamo Mbatha, and choreographer and Idols SA judge Somizi Mhlongo and his humungous headwrap. Others spotted at the Superbowl included Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau, and former Miss South Africa winners Cindy Nell, Vanessa Carreira, and Peggy-Sue Khumalo. Last night showed that the pageant is by no means a lost cause. Sure, there were ticket giveaways, but the Superbowl was packed - and every sight of Strauss elicited screams . ..
