Vavi okay with the sack

If I am fired "so be it", Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi declared yesterday. Cosatu's executive committee meets today to deliberate on Vavi's future and the strain of a divided union federation. The committee is likely to discuss the forensic report implicating Vavi in financial irregularities. Vavi said he would not attend."If my refusal to attend . is used as a pretext to fire me, then so be it," he said. "There comes a time in the life of every organisation and every individual when we have to submit to the dictates of our conscience."Addressing the media at Cosatu headquarters, Vavi said he was convinced that no solution to Cosatu's problems would be found in a boardroom."Numsa, Cosatu's biggest affiliate, has been expelled from the body and has sided with Vavi in calling for a more vocal federation.President Jacob Zuma has recently called for a meeting of the tripartite alliance secretariat comprising Vavi, SA Communist Party general secretary Blade Nzimande and ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe to unify the alliance and Cosatu. While Vavi said he had no confidence in Cosatu's executive committee, he would continue to "vigorously pursue any realistic prospect to resolve this crisis".The labour federation giant is also facing a financial crisis. Vavi said it had lost R11-million in annual subscription fees after expelling Numsa, meaning it was "living R300000 a month beyond its income" and using its political fund to pay salaries."There is the likelihood of having to go with a begging bowl to our class enemies for money to hold a congress later this year," Vavi said. "This is a recipe for a complete loss of independence."..
