Restaurant Review: Meet mixology masters

01 April 2015 - 02:54 By Greg Arde

One day, when Umhlanga becomes the centre of our bustling eThekwini metropolis, there won't be standing room in Lucky Shaker. For now it's in a random, but tastefully appointed, building opposite a huge, vacant lot in the rapidly evolving Umhlanga 'hood. It's in Park Lane if you want to punch that into your Garmin, or if you want to listen to your nagging wife as you drive around the block cursing that you can't find the place, it is diagonally opposite the Liberty building, over the road from Chris Saunders Park. The slick dudes who run this modern ensemble of dazzling bar, polished concrete floors, solid wood tables and industrial, glassed-in kitchen, describe it as "an oasis for those in search of a better experience".That it is. They serve wickedly crafted cocktails and great food. It attracts a more refined crowd, although it is relatively inexpensive.Having said that, it's not posh. On the night we were there a bloke ambled in wearing short jean pants and a vest. He was let off with admiring glances, probably because he blended in so well.He looked like Ryan Gosling and boasted a serious pair of guns. One of the partners told me they named it Lucky Shaker because the words have a positive vibe. They're mixology masters and their pineapple logo is apparently the international symbol for hospitality.I didn't know that. It's the sort of thing you learn from smart, quick-witted barmen, the likes of which you find at Lucky Shaker. The chap I spoke to slipped easily between chatting to me and to the mysterious, moustachioed fellow at the bar wearing the Andy Capp hat.We had fish tempura, burgers and tacos. The burger was okay, a seven out of 10. It was good to tuck into after the craft beer, but lacked pizzazz. The tacos and the fish were sensational. The owners would do well to have guys' and gals' portions because the lads definitely wanted more. The cocktails were brilliant.Cool SpotWhen to go?Night time or for long lunches.Whom to take?Somebody clever or good looking, or you'll find them there. What not to do?Order dessert - they don't have any. What to drink?A good selection of wine, craft beers and top cocktails such as the Dark and Stormy Night.Whatever you do.Ask for That Blonde. You can't take her home. How much do you need?Four of us had a bottle of wine, three cocktails, three draughts, and burgers, tacos and tempura fish. Bill with a tip was under R800.Where is it?Park Lane, Umhlanga: 082-450-6751..
