'Furious 7' races to box office record

The latest instalment of Fast and Furious roared to pole position in the North American box office stakes this weekend, easily overtaking last week's winner, Home,according to movie industry data. The latest Furious , the seventh in the street-racing and stunt-filled franchise, pulled in $147.2-million (more than R1.74-billion) on its opening weekend, according to figures from box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.The film features the late Paul Walker, who was killed in a car crash - not on set - in November 2013 while the film was in production.Senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, of the box-office tracker Rentrak, said: "Going well beyond a pitch-perfect marketing campaign and a great release date, the enthusiastic and devoted fan base came out in droves to support the franchise and Paul Walker - and the results are staggering."Ster-Kinekor announced yesterday that the record for the biggest weekend box office has once again been broken, aided by the national release of Furious 7 on Thursday last week.The company said: ''With Furious 7 screening at all Ster-Kinekor sites, including its Cine Prestige cinemas and the immersive IMAX® theatres, the weekend box office numbers have beaten the previous record for a weekend by more than 25%."The company has also broken its record for the biggest attendance for a Monday by 21%."..
