Ready. Steady. Bake South Africa. That's what local fans of the popular BBC series The Great British Bake Off will hear when 12 home bakers take part in a reality show that will test every aspect of their oven expertise as they battle it out to be crowned the country's best amateur baker. The call for prospective contestants went out this week for the 10-part series, which will be shot in Johannesburg. The show is set to air later this year.Kully Kaur Bains, head of programming Africa: BBC Worldwide, said she wants to try and have one S A judge and one UK judge on the show. Will either of the popular British judges and mentors, Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, be taking part?"A decision has not been made on who the judges will be. We are trying to keep it as close to the UK format as possible, with some tweaks for the South African audience."The bake-off television format has been hugely successful, not only in the UK, but internationally as well. The show is licensed in 17 countries, including Belgium, Australia, Israel and Finland."Wherever possible we like to take local taste into consideration," said Bains."We shall have an SA flavour to the show with treats such as pudding, milk tart and koeksisters. I can't wait to see what delicious goodies local bakers dream up."She said the entrants needed to have technical skills in baking and be passionate about it."The personality of the contestants also comes into play," she said.Interested participants can go to www.bbcsouthafrica.com to apply.Entries close on May 24...
