'Mbeki man' was out to get Zuma, claims lawyer

President Jacob Zuma's lawyer has detailed in court papers how then Scorpions boss Leonard McCarthy initiated a secret and illegal spying operation of Zuma to discredit or prosecute him, even accessing his bank account. Michael Hulley states that the DA has, for obvious strategic reasons, minimised McCarthy's role in the "malicious prosecution" of Zuma.The DA has approached the Pretoria High Court to set aside former acting national director of prosecutions Mokotedi Mpshe's 2009 decision not to prosecute Zuma for corruption, saying this was unconstitutional.Hulley says as head of the Scorpions, McCarthy wielded "immense statutory powers" to drive Zuma's prosecution."It is common cause that he was a staunch [Thabo] Mbeki supporter and anti-Zuma".He says the cynical use of prosecutorial powers to engineer political results was deeply offensive. ..
