Shoe Market: Finding their footing

Colleen Mossman and Roxanne Davison's preferred method of sharing their classically styled shoes with the world makes uncommon sense. The Durban mother-and-daughter team behind Blu Betty eschew mainstream retail stockists. They would rather trade online or wake up at 6.30am on a Saturday to line up their wares next to the fresh produce and artisan cheeses of the friends they have made at various markets around KwaZulu-Natal.Mossman said: "We're essentially a virtual shoe shop. We won't be selling to any retail shops. We utilise markets and at the moment we're also using our Facebook page."As soon as you're in the retail sphere, things begin to cost more."We're trying to engage directly with clients and keep our overheads down. That way we get to offer a really premium product but keep it at a price that's affordable."Blu Betty launched last July with a range of flat women's shoes in a variety of rich tones - hazelnut, emerald and ruby red.You can find them at Durban'sI Heart Market every first Saturday of the month and at the Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market every Saturday. In future the shoes will be available at the Durban Musgrave's Rooftop Market and Umhlanga's Up Market. A stall at the Kamers Vol Geskenke markets is in the works.Mossman is in charge of product design while Davison, a photographer, handles marketing and branding. Their shoes are made in a little factory in Pinetown's Knowles Centre.Demand led to the launch of a men's range in February. Oxfords, slip-ons, sneakers and velskoene feature."Men come in and look at the shoes and the leathers - especially our boots - and they want them in similar styles," said Mossman. The shoes are all made from non-corrected leather, meaning the hides used to make them have not been overly processed and the natural textures survive...
