Enraged Bulls face a runaway storm

24 April 2015 - 02:02 By Craig Ray and Chumani Bambani

Last week Schalk Burger was sipping expensive champagne and eating fine foods after winning the Comeback of the Year award at the prestigious Laureus Sports Awards in Shanghai, China. Tomorrow he will have to roll up his sleeves and do the dirty work for the Stormers. Burger has been selected at openside flank for the side's crunch Super rugby clash against the Bulls at Newlands.Burger, 32, has reinvented himself as a linking, passing and running flank since returning to the game after spending several days in a coma in 2013. But tomorrow he will be asked to go back to his roots as a blockbusting openside flank."It's not such as big mindset-shift for me because in broken play I'll still be able to be a part of the game," he said. "But from structured play, where their defence is good, I'll have to play towards the ball a little more."It will be a big challenge, not only against a good Bulls pack, but a very good Bulls team."The challenge excites Burger but he also admits that he prefers playing against teams from New Zealand and Australia rather than those from his own country."Believe it or not, I prefer playing against overseas opponents," Burger said. "But this is the one - the big north-south derby that we all grew up watching."It's always such a tough day at the office. It's more fun against New Zealand and Australian opposition for some reason."The teams have met 23 times at this level, with the Stormers holding a 13-9 winning edge with one draw. At Newlands, the Stormers have won seven of the previous 11 encounters with one draw. The score and winner are not yet known but one thing the blue herd from Pretoria know is that they are a different outfit to the one that was out-scrummed, out-muscled and out-witted two months ago."It is more about what happened with us. I think in the first game we had a lot of players coming off injuries. We are a different side from then," Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said yesterday."We've improved in a lot of areas in our own game. We definitely now have a more all-round game. That is what we will need to play away and be successful. Definitely, they also came together on their [Australasian] tour. After two tough games, they pulled together and won their last two."The Stormers v Bulls match airs on Supersport 1 from 7pm..
