Pen-pushers push themselves for national exercise day

Next week the Department of Basic Education will go where no other has gone before. Officials, and perhaps even minister Angie Motshekga, will try to set a world record for the most people star-jumping simultaneously at multiple venues for two minutes on May 8 - Physical Education Day.Department spokesman Elijah Mhlanga said not only did physical education lay the foundation for healthy lifestyles and social development, it also helped school attendance."It has been noted that pupils are less likely to be absent from school on days when they know that they will have PE lessons," said Mhlanga.He admitted that there were not enough teachers trained in the subject. Also, many schools "do not have sport facilities".Lyle Jacobs, a sports development specialist for Unicef, said it had trained 700 teachers so far through its Sports for Development programme...
