Refs plead for clemency

Senior referees have written to the SA Football Association, asking it to reconsider the recent spate of suspensions handed to officials for poor handling of matches. Victor Hlungwani, one of the more experienced middlemen, is among the signatories to a letter to Safa's refereeing chief, Peter Sejake, asking for the punishments to be put on ice as the season comes to an end."We need to have all the most experienced officials available for duty at this busy and important time of the year," Hlungwani said.Earlier this month, Safa announced the suspension of 12 officials for misdemeanours in the handling of games. This followed video reviews of their performances by Safa's referees' review committee, which looks into the conduct of match officials in the Premier Soccer League, National First Division and ABC Motsepe matches.Among those who have landed in hot water are Daniel Bennett, Sandile Dilikane, Stevens Khumalo, Zolile Mthetho, Thando Ndzandzeka, Moses Phale and Peter Rabophara, who are all regular appointees to top matches.Their offences related to significant mistakes in matches and they were suspended for between four to eight weeks and lost out on some of their match allowances.Hlungwani has himself been previously suspended by the committee for poor performances.The referees said they were awaiting a reply to their letter...
