There goes my sporting weekend

07 May 2015 - 02:02 By Archie Henderson

There was a time when Saturday was meant for sport, Sunday for resting and the rest of the week for work and net practice. Now weekends try to outdo one another, like the last one. It was packed with action, from a "fight of the century" that was just the fight of the month, to an ornery horse winning the Kentucky Derby wearing ear plugs the size of golf balls, to the biggest upset of the week.Ronnie O'Sullivan, a five-times world champion, lost in the quarterfinals of snooker's world championship to Stuart Bingham, 38, who went on to become the oldest first-time winner. O'Sullivan slunk away from The Crucible in Sheffield to play a game against Ed Miliband after which he proclaimed his support for Labour. One loser backing another? Tomorrow's British general election will tell.American Pharaoh continued his five-race winning streak, taking the Kentucky Derby while wearing $6 ear puffs. The bay colt is apparently easily distracted by ambient noise. Perhaps Manny Pacquiao could have done with those. If you believe Pacman's trainer, Freddie Roach, something is sometimes lost in translation between the American boxing coach and his Filipino charge.Roach admitted that control of Pacquiao's corner is often a problem. Roach relays instructions to the fighter through assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez because sometimes Pacquiao responds better to his home tongue."Buboy is supposed to repeat what I say in [Tagalog]," Roach told the BBC. "I'm not sure that's what happens sometimes, because he talks a lot longer than I do."When Pacquiao fought Miguel Cotto four years ago, he was getting hit on the ropes and Buboy started to cry. Roach thought: "I've got one guy doing what I told him not to do and another guy crying."On Sunday, Mayweather won convincingly on points and has now beaten 48 opponents, one wife and a girlfriend. For many American fans the biggest event of the weekend was not even a sporting contest. The only exertion it required was going on stage to hug someone. The National Football League's draft is watched by millions and decides which teams will get the pick of the college rookies. It's a bit like a yearling sale. The first pick was Jameis Winston, a star quarterback, who went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Winston did not pitch to hug anyone on stage, probably because of the controversy swirling around him. He was recently kind of cleared of raping a fellow student, who has since filed a civil suit against him.Police investigating the allegation failed to take a DNA sample, ignored the complainant's identification of her attacker, never interviewed the player and never tried to obtain a video of the incident taken by a teammate of Winston. So much for the sordid side of sport. This weekend it will be less hectic, with the highlight a schools rugby derby in Cape Town between SACS and Bishops. In the past SACS have been pushovers. No longer. They recently beat Boland Landbou, which is like Manny Pacquiao knocking out Floyd Mayweather. Played against the backdrop of Table Mountain, it should be a cracker...
