Jog Log: Park Run is fun — with fangs

Everyone is competitive. You might believe yourself to be the antithesis of Lance Armstrong's win-at-all-costs school of competitiveness but deep down this is a lie. Scampering through the foliage at Park Run will surely expose your inner Genghis Khan.Masquerading as a casual 5km jog, Park Run is really a race to the death against neighbours and friends. As the name suggests, the run takes place in parks across the country.Started in 2004 by a small group of overzealous Brits who clearly did not believe in sleeping in, Park Run has spread across the globe. In South Africa, it has expanded to more than 50 locations nationwide, attracting more than 100000 runners. The run is timed and requires would-be participants to register online. Once the necessary digital paperwork is filled out, all that is left to do is make your way to the nearest Park Run location with the provided barcode, some snazzy running shoes and a dog (optional).Part of the allure of Park Run, other than showing off, is that it attracts all manner of people. There are tired parents burdened with baby-laden strollers, single people running like peacocks in front of a mirror and middle-aged types hoping that running 5km at 8am will alleviate their suburban ennui. There are also people who just really like to run.Ostensibly the only racing that is supposed to happen at Park Run is between yourself and the clock, but only the iron-willed can resist getting involved in a duel with the brightly coloured runner a few paces ahead of you.Whether you manage to resist the temptation or not, Park Run is arguably the healthiest reason to skip an early-morning church service and is also pretty darn fun.For more information visit www.parkrun.co.za..
