One less drink for a longer life

Four in five drinkers would live longer if they cut their alcohol intake by just a glass of wine a week, according to an international study. The report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says "the vast majority of drinkers" would benefit from cutting back.Its study, Tackling Harmful Alcohol Use, says international research shows that between 78% and 83% of all drinkers can reduce their risk of death by having just one less unit of alcohol per week."Approximately four in five drinkers in the countries examined in the report would reduce their risk of death from any cause if they cut their alcohol intake by one unit per week, that is the equivalent of a small glass of wine," it concludes.The report on global trends compares 40 countries.The highest level of alcohol consumption was in Estonia, followed by Austria, France, Ireland and the Czech Republic.Overall, consumption levels have fallen or remained stable in most countries, the report says.The report found that women who went to university were significantly more likely to drink more than those with less education.The highest proportion of hazardous drinking among women was found among those aged 45 to 64.The report said much of this was done at home, "hidden from public view".While more education and a higher social status increased the chance that women were heavy drinkers, the opposite was true among men, where heavy drinking was linked to lower status and less education, the research found. ..
