Public servants take fight to CCMA

Public sector trade unions will enter another round of pay talks today. Negotiations between the Department of Public Service and Administration and the unions collapsed and the two will now resort to conciliation at the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council in Centurion today.The unions have moved from their initial demand of 15% to about 10%, while the department has tabled a "final offer" of 7%.Cosatu public service unions represent about 58% of public service employees in education, health, and safety and security.The National Education and Health Workers' Union, a member of Cosatu, said yesterday that it was considering the government offer."The unions are hovering between 9% and 9.5%," said Nehawu spokesman Sizwe Pamla. "We are engaging on some of the technicalities [of] the offer. For example, the housing allowance is not given to two married people both of whom are working for the state."Nehawu was also discussing the state's demand for a multi-year wage agreement linked to consumer price inflation.Pamla said the unions would hammer out a united position before meeting the employers.The Department of Public Service and Administration refused to comment.* Meanwhile negotiations between municipal workers and the SA Local Government Association are expected to resume on May 26...
