Illegal street racer loses his dice with death

A driver taking part in illegal drag racing in Ottery, Cape Town, died after he lost control of his car and ploughed into roadside poles. Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the accident happened on Old Strandfontein Road at about 1.30am on Sunday.This is one of the city's hot spots for drag racing. Others are Klipfontein Road, parts of the N1, Brackenfell and Scottsdene."City traffic officers arrested two motorists for reckless and negligent driving in the Ottery area on the same evening as well as 12 others for driving under the influence of alcohol," said Smith.The city had weekly operations targeting drag racers, and usually made four or five arrests."I have been on a gang operation in Ottery ... the noise from the drag racing is so loud that you have difficulty hearing the person who is standing next to you."Smith said some drag racers had pregnant women in their cars. ..
