People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has cocked a snook at Britain's oldest pub, demanding it change its name. A report on The Daily Telegraph's website noted that the pub in question, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, has existed since the 8th century. Although the St Albans pub underwent many name changes over the centuries, it has been called Ye Olde Fighting Cocks since 1872 because of its history of cockfighting - a sport the UK banned in the 1800s.Peta now wants the name changed to Ye Olde Clever Cocks to "reflect compassion for animals". Needless to say this has ruffled a few patrons' feathers.Peta director Mimi Bekhechi said: "Changing the name would help celebrate chickens as the intelligent, sensitive and social animals they are."According the report, a poll by The Review newspaper found 61% of its readers opposed the name change. One 31-year-old said: "Rather than worrying about the name of a pub, I think Peta should worry about looking after chickens at chicken farms, for example."..
