Fairground Action: Playing hard

Mix up one of Durban's premier party spots with some of the country's most popular music acts. Add a dash of amusement park fervour and - voila! - it's the Enchanted Playground. We chatted with one of the party trinity, event organiser Lee Govender, about the rides and rhythms behind this South African first.Why will the Enchanted Playground be different from any other event the city has seen?The festival is a South African first, a carnival-themed event featuring full-size carnival rides, art installations and a myriad of costume-clad performers fused with a live and electronic music concert.What can the public expect?A two-day carnival experience that combines live and electronic music with a cutting-edge production and sound design.Tell us about the inspiration behind the projectThe inspiration stems from most Durbanites' fondest childhood memory - visiting the funfair at the Durban beachfront - hence the idea of creating a festival that could re-create childhood memories and bring back that sense of nostalgia.How did you first become involved in the process?Collaboratively, the Enchanted Playground team has more than 80 years of entertainment industry experience. Collectively we have built nightclubs that have set the benchmark for dance music in South Africa. When I presented the idea to the team, it sparked their interest instantaneously.How did you go about selecting the acts lined up for the Enchanted Playground?Our plan was to create a proudly South African festival showcasing leading artists, bands, live performers and DJs. Theartists range from bands such as Freshlyground, Watershed and Gangs of Ballet to hip-hop artists like Cassper Nyovest. The artists are leaders in their respective genre.Do you have hopes of this becoming an annual event?Yes, we intend to produce the Enchanted Playground in Durban for the next five years with the intention of rolling into other cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town.Who does the funfair belong to?That is a trade secret, unfortunately. I can, however, confirm that we have an airtight exclusivity deal for the funfair and the owner is one of the most humble and loyal people I have ever met.The festival is set to take over Durban's Moses Mabhida People's Park East onJune 13 and 14...
