Initiative to open job opportunities for jobless youth

The City of Johannesburg is pulling all stops to deal with youth unemployment. Yesterday it launched Vulindlela eJozi, a youth programme which will link the jobless youth to opportunities.This happens at the time when political parties battle to win youth support for next year's local government elections.Vulindlela eJozi will target youth between the ages of 18 and 34 who have never worked.Harambee, an employer initiative, has placed 15000 youth into full-time jobs over the past four years nationally.Its studies conducted last year found that the city had over 900000 job opportunities for first-time jobseekers.Job opportunities were in industries such as retail, manufacturing, construction, communications, information technology, mining, utilities and hospitality industries, and others.Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau announced Vulindlela eJoziin his state of the city address early last month. It kicks off on June 16, on Youth Day.The drive will be carried out in partnership with Harambee. It aims to reach about 200000 youth. The city will spend R150-million on the initiative in one year...
