How to call on a lion

Having twice visited the Lion Park just outside Johannesburg in the past five months with foreign friends, I have to say that I can see how some people could become confused about the safety rules of the park. When you arrive at the ticket counter, the TV screens above show videos of humans interacting with lions and other animals. To a first-time visitor, these videos could give the erroneous impression that all the animals in the park are relatively tame.Nor do the staff forbid visitors from opening their car windows or leaving their vehicles - though warnings to this effect are placed on signs, and on the pamphlets that come with the tickets. But it would be preferable for these warnings to be made verbally clear to every visitor. When you drive into the lion enclosure, there are guards - some on foot, others in cars - not more than 50m from the gates. To an uninformed tourist, especially one not particularly fluent in English, opening a car window to take a picture might not seem overly dangerous in such circumstances. In the park's defence, it cannot be held fully accountable for visitors who behave recklessly and it is difficult to supervise everybody, especially on busy days.Apparently, the lion park will move to a bigger and better facility. I hope that it will do everything it can to improve safety standards and so prevent a repeat of the recent tragedy. My condolences to the victim's family, and to the fellow passenger who was injured and traumatised. What happened was a truly awful thing, but one cannot blame the lioness for behaving as wild animals do...
