Head-to-head clash as Uzalo gets R5m boost

It might be the most watched soapie in the country, but SABC1's flagship drama, Uzalo, needs help and was given a R5-million bailout yesterday by the City of Durban. Councillors went head-to-head over the payment, which was approved by the counci l's executive committee.Gugu Zuma-Ncube, one of the producers of the show, is President Jacob Zuma's daughter.Uzalo 's production company, Stained Glass, approached eThekwini's economic development committee to request "sponsorship" of R8.5-million. The committee approved a R5-million payment, but instructed city officials to identify savings that could result in the remaining R3.5-million being paid.Producers warned that if the city did not help, the show might be forced to move filming to Johannesburg and lay off 132 staff.Stained Glass said the money was not going solely to Uzalo , but to the company for "training and infrastructural development".The DA's Heinz de Boer questioned why Durban was funding a private company that was "set up to make a profit", while DA party caucus leader Zwakhele Mncwango questioned whether the payment was being made because of "surnames".Council Speaker Logie Naidoo said: " R5-million sounds like a lot , but the mileage we will get you can't put a number on "...
