Restaurant Review: Botanico: get ready to eat the hype

24 June 2015 - 02:07 By SJ Blackie

Café Del Sol's Botanico is the new northern suburbs favourite situated in the Bryanston Shopping Centre. It's seriously difficult to get a reservation but I managed to secure a booking from 6pm till 8pm, as long as I promised to eat quickly.I usually abhor restaurants that have an ''in and out" rule, but I had to see what all the hype was about. The outside area looks welcoming, filled with plants and cushioned benches that call for long, lazy lunches. The service is attentive. Too zealous, actually. When you're mid-mouthful , you're obliged to feel sorry for the hovering waiter who wants to check how your meal is going for the 10th time. But it's better than no service at all, and the manager was quick to take on board that the tiny portion of beetroot tagliatelle with slow roast lamb was incredibly salty and pretty underwhelming for one of the most expensive items on the menu.My friend's main course of roast duck with berry sauce and vanilla gnocchi was too sweet for me, but she liked it.Would I go back? Yes, if someone else was paying. I'd like to try the actual Café Del Sol in Olivedale.Isn't the original always better than the sequel? The lowdownWho should go?A financier on his first post-divorce date. What to do?Ask to sit outside if warm. How much?Expect to pay a hefty R750 for a shared starter, mains, shared dessert and two glasses of wine.Whatever you doBook in advance. This place is packed.Where is it?Bryanston Shopping Centre, Cnr William Nicol Drive and Ballyclare Avenue, Johannesburg, 011-463-0207...
