Six perish after staircase collapses inside tavern

Eight young women died after the collapse of a staircase at a tavern in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, yesterday morning. Police said six of the victims died on the scene in Makhaza and two died on the way to hospital when the private vehicle they were in was involved in a crash."We've got eight fatalities in total. They are all females between the ages of 15 and 23," said the police's Andre Traut.Six people, aged 17 to 24, had been injured.Harare district police have opened an inquest to find out whether anyone could be held responsible for the collapse, which occurred at about 3am.A culpable homicide case was opened to investigate the car accident.Six people have died this week in connection with the current initiation season, the Eastern Cape health department said yesterday. Ten teens were hospitalised after botched circumcisions during their initiation rituals on June 17. ..
