Restaurant review: Relocated Possums has retained its traffic

01 July 2015 - 10:06 By SJ Blackie

A Capetonian friend recently remarked that all restaurants in Johannesburg seem to be clustered around car parks. For a city known as the biggest urban forest in the world, it's ironic that most of our eating is done on pavements.Possums, a previous Parkhurst pavement establishment, has taken over Burnside's in Craighall Park, giving it a lick of yellow paint and adding olive trees and a fountain. From the tables outside you can still enjoy a view of Johannesburg's finest 4x4s.It is the perfect place to have a sunny Sunday brunch. The menu is small and focuses on the breakfast winners: eggs Benedict, traditional English and omelettes. They didn't have a ''health breakfast" on the menu but we were brought fresh fruit, thick yoghurt and runny honey after asking. The herb omelette seemed promising, but though it delivered on fluffiness it sadly lacked flavour and finesse. Our ciabatta yearned for a little bit of butter and jam. The service is predictably a little scattered for a new restaurant but it shows promise, especially as the owner was doing the rounds at the tables. If you're the type interested in catching up on the week's gossip with a skinny latte, Possums is the place to while away your Sunday.6 Burnside Avenue, Craighall Park, 011-326-3970..
