The SABC yesterday appointed Frans Matlala as its new chief executive officer. Matlala - who is known be a staunch supporter of the public broadcaster's controversial current chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng - said he knew he faced a daunting task but was prepared for the job.Having previously served as a senior executive at Standard Bank, African Life SA and First National Bank, Matlala was an adviser to the SABC board prior to his promotion. He appealed for support from his colleagues and external stakeholders, stating: "I am not new to the SABC but I am still a baby. Please give me support to make the SABC something a lot better that what it used to be."Matlala said he subscribed to the belief that Africans must tell their own stories."It is important as Africans to have our own story told effectively by us," he said.Motsoeneng said he was confident that Matlala would steer the public broadcaster in the right direction. He said: "I am an engine and he is the driver. There is no car without an engine. It is not politics, we run the SABC as a business."..
