Vavi's fate will be known in two weeks

02 July 2015 - 02:17 By Penwell Dlamini and Kingdom Mabuza

The next two weeks will decide the fate of former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and the expelled National Union of Metalworkers of SA (NUMSA). Eight rebel Cosatu unions who have called for a special congress to deal with the divisions said the coming days will determine the future of the labour federation.Numsa, which has fought over the past two years to get Cosatu national leadership to hold a special congress after a fallout on the direction the federation should take in relation to the ANC, will not be present at the special congress next week. This means the other eight unions which support Numsa's ambition have to battle it out and get support from other unions to address the contentious issues facing the union federation.Yesterday Numsa and the eight unions laid bare their plan for the special national congress. At the heart of the plan is getting the national leadership, already opposed to the eight unions, to endorse the agenda for the congress.According to the unions, the Cosatu constitution dictates that the agenda for a special congress should be determined by those who called for it. But this will be resisted by those aligned to Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini.During a media briefing outside the MTN offices in Johannesburg, where workers are on strike, Numsa president Andrew Chirwa told reporters the union wanted to become part of the special national congress but was prevented by Dlamini "and his clique"."We will not be there ... but comrades will be, including those that Sdumo continues to praise. There are sober workers who are for unity of workers and the federation."..
