SA's soccer agents are fighting back

South Africa's intermediaries, or agents in the old parlance, have taken a battering in recent times as the SA Football Association seeks to cap their earnings. Some fear they might lose up to 70% of their income if a regulation that they can earn only 3% commission comes into effect, and they have been fighting back.The launch of the South African Football Intermediaries Association, spearheaded by Mike Makaab, has won an interdict against Safa implementing the plans.So who are the deal brokers and who do they represent?Makaab has been a top intermediary in the local game for years after a brief career as a coach, during which he led Orlando Pirates to the National Soccer League title in 1994. He was technical adviser to the South African side that won the Africa Cup of Nations. Now CEO of ProSport International, Makaab has represented more than 100 Bafana Bafana players, including Andile Jali, Tsepo Masilela, Bernard Parker and Kagisho Dikgacoi.Glyn Binkin, team manager for Bafana in their 1996 triumph, runs The Player's Club and has worked with an impressive lineup. Lucas Radebe is the biggest name in his stable, but former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo is another of his current stars. Katlego Mphela. Lerato Chabangu and Morgan Gould are others.Lawyer Tim Sukazi took coach Steve Komphela to Kaizer Chiefs and also looks after Muhsin Ertugral. He is CEO of QT Sports, with more than 50 players on its books, including Thuso Phala, Rivaldo Coetzee, Brilliant Khuzwayo and Erick Mathoho.Paul Mitchell of Siyavuma Sports has Siyanda Xulu, another recent transfer to Chiefs, as his headline client, but also does a lot of work on the African continent.Jazzman Mahlakgane was until recently the agent for Siphiwe Tshabalala and Itumeleng Khune, before the latter moved to an English agency. He has also represented Teko Modise.Steve Kapeluschnik is the agent for former Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter and Amakhosi midfield star George Lebese.Rob Moore is a trailblazer . Benni McCarthy and Steven Pienaar have been his headline acts down the years, and currently he advises the likes of May Mahlangu, Kermit Erasmus and Daylon Claasen...
