Teenager dies after hospitals reject him

A teenager died in the waiting room of a Durban hospital at the weekend after allegedly being turned away by two government hospitals. One hospital reportedly did not have doctors or nurses who could handle trauma cases and the other would not admit him because he was injured in a location outside its area of responsibility.The 19-year-old, who has not been named, was crossing an intersection in Verulam, north of Durban, at around 1pm on Saturday when he was hit by a car and severely injured. Paramedics treated him at the scene. They then contacted the Osindisweni Hospital, in Verulam, and asked for help in stabilising the teenager.The nurse to whom they spoke allegedly told them the hospital was not equipped to deal with severe trauma cases.The paramedics were told to take the teenager to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital, 18km away. But, again, he was allegedly denied treatment."Upon arrival, doctors refused to treat him, stating that the collision occurred in the Verulam area. [They said] the patient must be taken back to Osindisweni," Prem Balram, owner of security firm Reaction Unit SA, posted on the company's Facebook page.When told that they had been turned away at Osindisweni, the Mahatma Gandhi doctors told the paramedics to take their patient to Addington Hospital, 24km away. An argument ensued and during it the man had heart failure and died.Sam Mkhwanazi, provincial health spokesman, said he would comment when he had all the facts...
