Fresh Produce: Springboard for the young and hungry

14 July 2015 - 02:12 By Andrea Nagel

The Turbine Art Fair is aimed at new collectors. It exhibits works for sale for under R40000. One of its defining features is a focus on young artists launching their careers.A section at the fair is devoted to Fresh Produce, an exhibition hosted by the Visual Arts Network of South Africa supported by RMB with the aim of giving artists who are not yet represented by a gallery the chance to show their work. This year, Fresh Produce is curated by Zanele Mashumi, a young gallerist with her own space in Soweto called Next Door.Mashumi's aim is to develop up-and-coming artists in Soweto. As a curator who has hosted a number of exhibitions, each with a view to supporting emerging artists, she is perfectly placed to select the young artists for Fresh Produce. Portfolio reviews ran from February to April in Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town. More than 70 portfolios were whittled down to nine artists.Mashumi "studied fine art at the University of Johannesburg and when I graduated I was met by overwhelming confusion as to how to utilise opportunities that came my way. So I decided to open a space as a 'first step' gallery - as an initial reference for young artists looking for representation."Mashumi says her selection was made on the standard of the artwork as well as the professionalism of the young artists.''We chose candidates who we felt could sustain a career in the art world, who are committed to a career in art, who will be able to sell their work and who had shown a progression throughout their portfolio of work. We are exhibiting sculpture, painting, drawing and photography."Unlike last year, there was no brief and the young artists were expected to produce pieces that reflected their identity and style.Visit the Fresh Produce exhibition at the Turbine Art Fair from Thursday to Sunday..
