Water crisis needs R1bn, and prayers

KwaZulu-Natal needs a further R1-billion to deal with the worsening drought in the province, says Water Affairs Minister Nomvula Mokonyane. She said a "crisis" persisted despite recent unseasonal winter rainfall, and the national and provincial governments needed to intervene.Mokonyane visited various sites in the province yesterday as part of a fact-finding mission. Today she will meet residents affected by drastic water restrictions in the Ilembe area north of Durban, and visit Hazelmere Dam, which is less than 30% full.Speaking to The Times after a visit to the Nonoti area on the north coast, Mokonyane said R500-million had already been spent on various interventions, but it was not enough."We need another R1-billion," she said. "It's not that there is no water in KwaZulu-Natal, there's just no water where it is needed. There are 14 sources of water supply in the province and only four of them are below 50% [capacity]. But those four are making it so complicated."Mokonyane said the money would go towards upgrading Hazelmere Dam among other projects. She added: "People need to use water more carefully. The shower is not a rehearsal room for learning how to sing. We are a water-scarce country."Everybody has to be on board. We are engaging everyone. We are talking to scientists, we are engaging with the media, we are engaging with business."Even religious leaders would be consulted."If people feel that they can help [by praying] then we will be there with them, too," said Mokonyane...
