It is going to take a lot more than 67 minutes to fix SA

So it's Mandela Day tomorrow. Expect the celebrities and the businessmen who claim a modicum of social responsibility to come out in force for their 67 minutes of painting a wall here and planting a tree there. Smile, snap, scram.Politicians will invoke the name of Nelson Mandela - it's his birthday after all, and it's his deeds that we're trying to emulate.Inspiring speeches will be read. "Every day should be Mandela Day", they'll say. The call to action will be loud and clear. But the resolve of most South Africans to actually do something that will make a difference will be rather more modest. However, given how bleak things can be in South Africa, we will take this one day on which we come together to make South Africa work, albeit to a large extent for a bit of coverage in the newspapers or a sound-byte on radio or television. We'll take it.Just imagine how different the country would be if we all had the resolve to make South Africa work all the time? There would beNo kangaroo-court killings; No load-shedding;No violence against women and children; No hate crime; No corruption; No racism, intolerance and xenophobia; andA robust economy that generates jobs and the taxes needed for healthcare and education. In their place there would be a resolve to fight against white domination and black domination.Like Mandela, we would all cherish "the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities".This would be a country in which leaders were held to account, and who acknowledged and listened to the voice of the people. But what if we went beyond the charity porn for 67 minutes?..
