Woman the first African to receive drone pilot's licence

A female South African pilot made history this month by becoming the first person in Africa to receive a "drone" pilot licence. Nicole Swart, 23, was handed the licence two weeks after remotely piloted aircraft systems were integrated into the South African civil aviation airspace.South Africa is one of a handful of countries around the world to have introduced comprehensive regulations to guide remote pilot operations.Swart, who works as a testing standards officer at the SA Civil Aviation Authority, also holds the highest pilot's licence - the Airline Transport Pilot's Licence.Swart said: " I believe technology is advancing rapidly and in the near future this mode of transport will be as common and necessary as cellular phones are in this era."I therefore wanted to ensure that, when that time comes, I am already a step ahead. Besides, both licences are crucial in my line of work, as the department in which I work is responsible for upholding testing standards for, among others, pilots."Traditionally, drones were used primarily in military operations. They can be flown from the ground or by another aircraft.Other uses of drones include conservation efforts, aerial surveillance, scientific research, journalism, and much more...
