Stepping forward, Hollywood style

There is swagger. It is polished, it screams blockbuster movie and it suggests that the ANC in Gauteng is trying to market themselves differently in the lead-up to the 2016 municipal elections. The advert has appeared in a national newspaper and shows Gauteng Premier David Makhura, flanked by his team of MECs, walking down a Johannesburg main street. This could be Danny Ocean and friends in the movie Ocean's Eleven. It is a copy of a Hollywood movie poster."What they are trying to communicate is that they are the most efficient team of the nine provinces," said political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi."I think they are trying to distance themselves from the crises facing the government."These crises, he said, were corruption and Nkandla, which have become the new symbols of President Jacob Zuma's failings.The advertisement appeals to the middle class, believes Matshiqi, and it is an attempt to regain the support of the middle class in the lead-up to the 2016 municipal elections."There is something very posh about it, I just do not see how it could resonate with someone living in Diepsloot," he said.Another political analyst, Stephen Friedman, disagreed saying he felt it was not a break away or rebranding but rather, as a large corporation might try, an attempt to appeal to a different segment of the consumer base.Friedman added that he would not make too much of the advert.Thabo Masebe, head of communications in the Gauteng Government, said the advertisement had nothing to do with the upcoming elections."David Makhura took the approach to showcase his team, rather than the usual emphasis on the individual," Masebe said.He said that in the past there had been criticism of outdoor advertisements that simply focused on individuals."It will be interesting to see if this is a one-off or if there will be continuity, and whetherit will be taken out to social media platforms," said Matshiqi...
