Nurse dies in room blaze

A student nurse at Durban's RK Khan hospital in Chatsworth died after a fire in his room in the hospital residence at the weekend. The department of health said a nursing assistant smelled smoke and investigated. After checking several rooms he arrived at the student's and found that the door was locked and hot.He called for help. Another staff member arrived and broke down the door. The nursing student was on the floor and the room was on fire."Attempts were made to extinguish the blaze and the student was put on a stretcher and rushed to the resuscitation room for medical assistance," the department said.He was admitted to the intensive care unit but did not recover.KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo said: "We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death under such circumstances."The matter is now under investigation by the police." ..
