29 July 2015 - 02:17 By Sylvia McKeown

You can tell a lot about a city from its street food. Languages, races, classes and customs collide on the street and are reflected in the flavours of the food you find there. On Saturday the Street Food Festival comes to Johannesburg for the first time. It promises a market day bursting with paella, souvlaki, dumplings, Ethiopian fare, ribs and wings, braaied white mielies and roasted nuts. It will also be the debut of new local gin distillers Hope on Hopkins direct from Salt River in Cape Town, who will be manning a service bar to deal with any inhibitions.Studio H - the same team who wow the Cape with the Spier Secret Festival - are bringing their food fanaticism to the streets of Maboneng. It's the brainchild of festival director Hannerie Visser, whose passion for food (especially toasted cheeses) has made her an influencer in the industry.''By showcasing local street food culture, we hope to inspire and empower people to pursue their love for food as a career," says Visser..There will also be an eating competition and a conference. Throughout the day, talks will be presented.Entrepreneur Uno de Waal from Between 10 and 5 will talk about digital marketing, Mail &Guardian's arts, culture and entertainment editor Zodwa Kumalo-Valentine will present a talk on ''How to Deal with the Media" and Thando Moleketi of Jozi Foodie Fix fame will speak about how to make food your business. The Street Food Festival takes place at Maboneng's Hazard Gallery this Saturday. Admission to the market is free. Tickets to talks are R300 and the dinner is R350. Book at Quicket.co.za...
