PSL stars must have drive and ambition

It is time local soccer stars showed some balls. Within a week of each other, two PSL players spoke with straight faces about not wanting to join bigger clubs, for fear of sliding down the pecking order at the prospective new clubs.First came new University of Pretoria player Vukile Mngqibisa's revelation that he had turned down Soweto giants Orlando Pirates to sign for AmaTuks instead. How do you leave a club like Polokwane City, who finished 12th last season, for a side that finished 13th - and pass up the opportunity to play for one of the continent's most successful clubs?"The likes of Free State Stars, Pirates, and [Bloemfontein] Celtic were interested in me," Mngqibisa told journalists earlier this month. He continued: "Pirates did call me. They also called my agent, but I thought this was not the right time to join them. Pirates are too big for me. I need to play a few more seasons in the PSL before I join a team like Pirates."Mngqibisa is months away from turning 28 - given he has committed to staying in Pretoria for a few years to come, it's hard to see how he believes he will get another opportunity to represent a side that's guaranteed to challenge for the title. This week, last season's top goal-scorer in the league, Free State Stars striker Moeketsi Sekola, followed suit."As a player I know what's best for me," he said confidently. Fair enough, if that is a club that didn't make the cut for the top half of the table, and didn't qualify for the lucrative MTN8 competition.Sekola continued: "I think deciding to remain with the club [Free State Stars] will help me because I have seen a lot of players who have come and gone."Maybe Sekola's decision was also affected by the daunting possibility of leaving his home province's club (he was born in Botshabelo) for Gauteng. But that's football. While in Europe some "smaller" clubs have been known to cash-in on some of their brightest talent, by selling them off to big-spenders, there have also been examples of young talent showing personal ambition.Raheem Sterling has not even turned 21 yet, but he showed a great desire to join Manchester City.On the other hand, there are just as many examples of players who have failed to handle the demands and pressures of playing for big clubs. But that happens in every sphere of life.Doubt will always kill more dreams than failure ever will, the line goes...
