Series: Everything you've seen before, again

There will come a day when Hollywood decides that originality is cool again. When simply resurrecting an old story in young bodies and calling it a reboot will bore audiences. Until then we will have to make do with shows like Beauty and the Beast.This story doesn't involve talking cutlery and a well-mannered beast in an old fashioned suit. Instead it revolves around the lives of Cat Chandler (Kristin Kreuk), a good looking homicide detective with predictable levels of childhood trauma, and Dr Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan), the victim of clandestine military experiments that have given him beastly strength when his adrenaline spikes.It would be easy to write off Beauty and the Beast. It's generic in every way and yet it's made it to three seasons. Perhaps its secret, and Hollywood's, is that the broader public don't want surprises or a reason to think. Maybe what viewers want is a vague pretext to watch good looking people hurdle easy obstacles on their paths to love.Beauty and the Beast airs on Fridays on DStv channel 114...
