Joburg outfits new buses with tracking, cameras

Johannesburg's newly introduced Metrobuses have been fitted with GPS tracking systems and cameras. The main purposeis to monitor the bus drivers' behaviour but passengers will be kept an eye on as well.The city is pulling out all the stops to ensure driver and commuter safety with its new commuter bus fleet."The GPS and cameras work together as a way of tracking driver habits as well as the safety aspect for commuters and the drivers themselves," said City of Johannesburg transport executive director Lisa Seftel.The cameras will alert the control room to commuters who are misbehaving or are in need of emergency services.They will also enable a quick response by emergency services, including the police."It is a new start. The buses are safer and designed to reduce their carbon footprint, but that is not enough if the drivers are unsafe."That is why the systems are in place, to monitor and ensure quality control," Seftel said...
