South Africa is a favoured target of global cyber crime, according to fraudster turned security consultant Frank Abagnale. The key to combating fraud is the same technology used to commit it, he told the Experian Insight Conference, in Sandton, Johannesburg, yesterday.Abagnale wrote the best-selling biography Catch Me If You Can, which was turned into a film of the same name. He has been an anti-fraud consultant for the FBI and other government agencies and financial institutions for more than 35 years."What I did 50 years ago is 5000 times easier to do today," he said, referring to his cons and forgeries of cheques."Technology has made it very easy and certainly made it global. But you can use technology to prevent those crimes and that is the only way you will stop it - through good data analysis and good technology and keeping that technology up to date," Abagnale said.Cyber crime, including the theft of large amounts of personal data, are costing South African businesses billions of rands every year, according to recent reports from IBM and cyber-security company Symantec.The SA Banking Risk Information Centre reported that South Africa is the second-most targeted country for internet fraud and phishing attacks...
