Premier backs merging DA enclave with ANC municipalities

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has tacitly endorsed the formation of a metropolitan municipality on the West Rand. Replying to questions yesterday in the provincial legislature, Makhura said: "In the medium to long term, we must consolidate the smaller municipalities, especially in the West Rand and Sedibeng, into metros. Our view is that Gauteng will best be governed by a metropolitan system of governance."The ANC-led provincial government has been accused ofre-drawing municipal boundaries to dilute the strength of opposition parties, mainly the DA, in municipalities it does not govern. The DA stands to lose Midvaal - the only municipality in Gauteng not governed by the ANC - if it fails to successfully challenge the Municipal Demarcation Board's decision to establish the Vaal River City Metro, which will merge Midvaal with the ANC-run Emfuleni and Sedibeng municipalities...
